Rapids & Nextshift Team Up to Help 43 Kids Hit the Ice

Another Record-Breaking Gear for Kids Event in Low!
43 kids outfitted for the upcoming hockey season thanks to community generosity and team support.

The Paugan Falls Rapids, in partnership with Nextshift, were thrilled to host another successful Gear for Kids event on Saturday, July 12th — and this year’s turnout set a new record. A total of 43 kids came out to get properly fitted for hockey gear, edging out last year’s total of 41.

The atmosphere was vibrant and full of energy, with clear skies, sunshine, and a warm breeze keeping everyone comfortable throughout the day. Whether families were attending for the first time or returning for a second season, there was a strong sense of community and excitement about the upcoming hockey year.

Most participants were able to go home with exactly what they needed — from full setups to individual pieces to complete their gear bags. Several families who benefited from last year’s event even returned to donate their outgrown equipment, allowing us to restock and help even more kids gear up this year.

Gear and cash donations came from all corners of the community, both in advance and onsite, highlighting just how essential this support is to the mission of Nextshift — a non-profit committed to making hockey more accessible for every child.

After their gear fittings, most kids took part in the Rapids Shooting Pad, getting the chance to test out sticks and gloves and take a few shots with guidance from Rapids players. Ronnie Rapid was another fan-favorite, captivating kids throughout the day with his high-energy antics and photo ops.

The event wouldn’t have been possible without an incredible group of volunteers. Nextshift was represented by Mackenzie Janes and Chet Holterman, while the Rapids were out in full force with players Joey Hamel, Bryan Kealey, Aidan Foley, and Ryan, Nolan, Carter, and Luke Peck. Coaches Randy Peck and John Peck were also on site, joined by equipment manager Riley Teed and a number of key volunteers including Scott and Austin Mahoney, Mike Lachapelle, and Cooper McCambley. Longtime Rapids superfans Derek Kealey, Darryl and Carl Mayer also lent a hand during the day. Last but not least, a big shout out to Emily Crites for being there to take some pictures of the event!

From the BBQ to the shooting station, and from gear fittings to mascot mayhem, the 2025 Gear for Kids Event was a true reflection of what the Rapids organization stands for — building excitement for hockey while strengthening community ties.

A huge thank you to Nextshift for making this event possible and for their continued commitment to helping more kids across the region get on the ice. We’re proud to work alongside such a passionate and impactful organization.

We’re thrilled to have helped 43 kids get what they need to hit the ice next season, and we can’t wait to see them out at the rink.
